Why Your Content Isn't Turning Into Clients (and the Missing Handover Step)

Jonathan Clark, wearing glasses and a dark shirt, gestures with both hands as he speaks on a Riverside video call, shown on a laptop screen with bookshelves behind him.

You are posting consistently, showing up and chasing the reach. Your views are climbing, but your client list isn't. So why does growing never quite turn into earning?

That is the question Jonathan Clark, Director of Instant Edge and a certified business coach with 29 years of coaching experience, tackles in Episode 11 of his live show, Chosen. His answer is simple, and it is good news: the problem probably isn't your content at all.

As Jonathan puts it: "You probably don't have a content problem. You probably got a handover problem."

Attention and income are two different games

Here is how the handover problem usually shows up. You post regularly, but the comments and DMs are quiet. In Jonathan's words, "Your follower count is climbing, but your diary is staying thin." There is a "work with me" link in your bio that nobody has clicked in months.

That doesn't mean you are doing it wrong. "Attention and income are two entirely different games," Jonathan says.

The baton drop

Jonathan uses the image of a relay race. The runners charge down the track with the baton, and yet "the fastest runners in the world can still lose if the baton drops during the handover."

For most coaches, consultants and speakers, the running isn't the issue. You are already running. The handover is where it goes wrong.

So what is the handover? Jonathan defines it as "the thing that sits between someone liking you and someone paying you."

Why your audience isn't ready to buy from a reel

Most of the people watching you are in what Jonathan calls the "not yet" crowd, the biggest group on the internet. They are watching you and trusting you, but they are nowhere near ready to leap straight from a reel to their credit card.

Asking them to book a discovery call after a short video is too much, too soon. What matters is "what happens after they believe you." Too often, "They watch, they nod, and they scroll on."

The fix: build a bridge asset

What goes into that gap is a bridge asset (Jonathan also calls it a conversion event). It is a longer piece of content, such as a webinar, a masterclass, a live training or a proper walk through your framework, process and steps. You build it once.

Here are the four steps Jonathan recommends:

  1. Build one bridge asset. A longer video or live session that walks people through your framework or client path.
  2. Build it around a single promise. "I work with this particular kind of person who has this particular problem, and I help them get this particular outcome." That outcome has to be something they really want. And resist the urge to cover everything: "Don't try and tell them everything that you know."
  3. Change your call to action. First, make sure you have one. Then stop saying "work with me" or offering a free strategy session, which Jonathan describes as "code for sales pitch." Instead, end with an invitation like "come and learn this properly with me live."
  4. Sell inside the session, not inside the post. Your post is there to get attention and prove you know what you are talking about. "The post job is to get the invite. The session's job is the conversion."

What this looks like in practice

Jonathan shares two examples in the episode.

A coach is posting daily tips. She is getting decent likes but zero bookings. Swap her call to action for an invite to a free live training on her best framework, and the training can do what a reel never could: thirty minutes of trust, positioning, credibility and proof, with an offer.

A consultant ends every post with "book a free thirty minute strategy call". The trouble is, "Everybody offers free thirty minute strategy calls, yet everybody is looking for more clients." Nobody books cold. People don't really want a strategy call; "They just wanna know, can you fix my problem or not?" Adding a twelve minute explainer between the content and the call means people arrive at the call already informed. "They're already educated. They're already informed. They're already motivated."

From cliff edge to staircase

When the handover is in place, everything changes. "Content then stops being a cliff edge that people drop off of... And instead it becomes a staircase."

It is tempting to blame the algorithm, the platform, or to decide social media just doesn't work for your business. But it works for other people. "It's not broken. It's not the algorithm. It's not the platform. It's just missing a step."

You don't need weeks to build it, either. Jonathan recommends Russell Brunson's Perfect Webinar format, plus AI tools for the script and slides. Record it on Zoom or your phone, and your bridge is built.

Your action step this week

Pick one post or one page where you currently ask for the sale a little too early. Replace that ask with an invite to your bridge asset: a short training, a walk through, a session or a masterclass. Put the invite out and watch what happens.

As Jonathan says, "most people never fix it because nobody ever sits down and actually builds a handover with them."

Building Authority Faster Through Media Appearances: 4 Tactics to Transform Your Visibility

Are you tired of consistently creating content but still feeling invisible in your industry?

You’re not alone. Many coaches, consultants, and experts struggle to establish authority, even after months of hard work. In this post, you will discover why media appearances can build your authority faster than organic content alone, and four actionable tactics to leverage media to boost your visibility and credibility.

Why Media Appearances Matter

Media appearances, such as podcast guesting and contributions to industry publications, offer a shortcut to credibility. Unlike organic content creation, which can be slow and uncertain, media placements provide borrowed trust from established platforms. This means you can gain authority much more quickly and effectively.

When you feature in reputable publications or podcasts, you signal to potential clients that you are a trusted expert. This third-party validation makes a significant difference in how prospects perceive you and can lead to an increase in inquiries and conversions.

1. Get on Podcasts

One of the most effective strategies for building authority is to secure podcast appearances. Here’s how to do it:

- Identify Target Podcasts: Find five podcasts in your niche with audiences that match your ideal clients.

- Craft a Compelling Pitch: Write a one-paragraph pitch that highlights the value you bring to their audience.

- Aim for Regular Appearances: Set a target for two to three podcast guest spots each month. Each appearance serves as both a credibility asset and an opportunity to introduce yourself to new audiences.

2. Utilize HARO (Help a Reporter Out)

HARO is a great resource for getting media exposure. Here’s how to make the most of it:

- Sign Up: Register on the HARO website to receive daily journalist requests.

- Respond Quickly: When a relevant query arrives, respond promptly with a concise and quotable answer (3-5 sentences). Speed is essential here.

3. Approach Local News Stations

Local media can be less competitive and more accessible than national outlets. Here’s how to pitch

- Connect Your Expertise to Local Stories: Find angles that tie your expertise to current local news stories or events.

- Email Your Pitch: Craft a clear email that outlines your proposed topic and includes a brief credibility statement.

4. Write for Industry Publications

Contributing to industry-specific publications can significantly boost your visibility. Follow these steps:

- Identify Relevant Publications: Find two or three trade publications that your ideal clients read.

- Understand Submission Guidelines: Study the publication’s submission requirements and pitch your idea with a specific angle.

Conclusion

Building authority through media appearances can transform your visibility and credibility in your field. By implementing these four strategies—podcast guesting, utilizing HARO, approaching local news, and writing for industry publications—you can effectively leverage other people’s audiences and accelerate your path to authority.

Make a commitment this week to take action on at least one of these tactics. As Jonathan Clark emphasizes, legends are engineered, not born. Start engineering your authority today!

The Value of Expertise: Why Your Knowledge is Your Best Asset

In uncertain economic times, many professionals question their financial security and potential for growth. What if the market crashed tomorrow? How quickly could you rebuild your portfolio? The answer lies not in your investments, but in your expertise. This blog post will explore why your knowledge and skills are the most reliable income assets you own and how you can leverage them to create financial security.

Understanding the Importance of Expertise

Your expertise—gained through lived experiences, qualifications, and insider knowledge—is an invaluable asset. In this post, we’ll discuss how you can package and monetize that expertise, particularly if you are a coach, consultant, freelancer, or creator looking to maximize your income.

Why You Should Rely on Your Knowledge

Let’s consider a real-life example to illustrate this point. Sarah, a senior marketing consultant with eleven years of experience, found herself in a precarious situation when her agency lost its biggest account, resulting in her contract being cut. The simultaneous decline in her stock portfolio only added to her stress. However, it was this challenging moment that led her to reassess what she truly owned—her knowledge and expertise. This realization is crucial: when economic conditions shift, your skills remain intact.

Identifying Your Income Sources

Many professionals struggle with feelings of imposter syndrome, questioning their worth and hesitating to charge for their services. Have you ever felt underqualified to ask for what you deserve? This post will help you shift your mindset. Your expertise should not just be viewed as a job; treating it with the value it deserves can lead to significant financial rewards.

The Control Factor

One of the key advantages of relying on your expertise is control. Unlike investments, where external factors dictate your returns, your skills can be directly monetized. You decide how to develop and apply your knowledge, enabling you to adapt to changing market conditions. By viewing yourself as the asset manager of your expertise, you reclaim your power and influence over your financial future.

Building Resilience Through Expertise

Your knowledge is resilient. When market downturns occur, those with in-demand skills often thrive by offering valuable insights and solutions. For instance, during economic crises like the 2008 financial crash, professionals with specialized expertise were able to rebuild and even flourish. This adaptability is a critical aspect of financial security; it allows you to pivot and respond to new challenges and opportunities.

Maximizing Your Earning Potential

To truly capitalize on your expertise, consider how you can diversify your income streams. Whether through consulting, coaching, creating online courses, or writing books, the possibilities are immense. The barrier to entry is much lower than traditional investments, which often require significant capital. Instead, all you need is time and commitment to develop your skills and increase your earning potential.

Conclusion: Embrace Your Expertise

In conclusion, your expertise is a compounding asset that can provide financial security and growth. Rather than viewing it as a hobby or a job, treat it as a career that can lead to significant rewards. As you develop and package your knowledge, remember that you have the power to influence your financial situation. Don’t let fear dictate your decisions; instead, embrace your expertise and the opportunities it can bring.

Key Takeaways

- Your expertise is a reliable income asset in uncertain times.

- Control your financial future by monetizing your skills.

- Diversify your income streams through various channels.
